Your guide to Kangaroo Island’s newest campgrounds
Kangaroo Island is renowned for its spectacular landscapes and has a well-earned reputation as an amazing spot to visit – and visiting just got even better, with 2 campground upgrades now complete.
Located in Cape Gantheaume Conservation Park and Wilderness Protection Area, on the south coast of the island, the secluded D’Estrees Bay and Murray Lagoon campgrounds will give visitors the opportunity to enjoy the peacefulness and vast wilderness of the park.
Here’s what each campground has to offer:
D’Estrees Bay Campground
The D’Estrees Bay Campground is made up of 8 campsites that are suitable for tents, caravans and campervans.
All the sites within the campground have access to the bay and some will have you waking up to spectacular ocean views – doesn’t get much better than that!
Upgrades to the campground included the addition of long-drop and accessible toilets and a picnic shelter.
Top tip: Bookings can be made for the campground up to 12 months in advance. Head to National Parks and Wildlife Service’s website to book online before you go.
Murray Lagoon Campground
The Murray Lagoon Campground features 8 campsites, including one for large school groups, suitable for tents, camper trailers, and caravans.
The campground is an ideal location for stargazing and is the perfect spot to catch magical sunrises and sunsets.
New additions to the campground include a camp shelter complete with a gas barbecue, picnic tables, 4 communal fire pits and long-drop toilets.

Getting to Kangaroo Island
There are 2 ways to get to Kangaroo Island – driving and flying.
To drive there, head to Cape Jervis, which is located about 2 hours south of Adelaide, then catch the SeaLink ferry to Penneshaw.
The ferry operates daily, except on Christmas Day, travelling between Cape Jervis and Penneshaw.
To avoid disappointment, book your spot on the ferry ahead of time.
You can take your campervan, camper trailer or caravan on the ferry – you’ll just need to specify the length of your vehicle when you make your booking.
To fly, book your flight with Qantas or Rex from Adelaide Airport to Kingscote Airport (about a 25-minute flight) and then it’s a 56 km drive out to the park.
