Where to eat in South Australia's national parks: cafés, kiosks, and food stops

Exploring South Australia's national parks is hungry work, and luckily, there are plenty of great spots to grab a bite to eat along the way.

From cafés to mobile food vendors, here’s a guide to some of the food options you’ll find in parks across the state.

Belair National Park

Old Government House – Step back in time with afternoon tea at Old Government House. The Friends of Old Government House often serve coffee, tea, and scones for just $5 during open hours on the first and third Sunday of each month, plus public holidays, from 1:00pm–4:00pm.

The Kiosk – Located near the adventure playground, The Kiosk is open on weekends, public holidays, and school holidays during business hours. It’s a great spot for a quick snack after a walk or a play.

EscapeGoat Goat Shed – If you're keen for a coffee and cake on the go, The Goat Shed is the place to stop. You can even pick up a bike to explore the park while you’re there.

Cleland Wildlife Park

The Barking Gecko Café – Open daily from 9:30am–5:00pm, with food served from 10:00am–4:00pm and coffee available from 9:30am–4:30pm.

You don’t need to purchase park entry to visit the Barking Gecko Café, which offers a seasonal menu featuring locally sourced ingredients from the Adelaide Hills. Whether you’re after a light lunch, a hearty meal, or a kids’ menu option, there’s something for everyone.

Relax in the leafy garden and spot Superb Fairy Wrens or potoroos, or warm up by the wood fire in winter.

Mount Lofty Botanic Garden

Bracegirdle’s Bus – Open from spring to autumn on weekends and public holidays from 9:00am–3:00pm (weather permitting).

Located at the lower car park, Bracegirdle’s offers signature hot chocolates, award-winning coffee, sweet and savoury treats, and ice cream.

Glenthorne National Park-Ityamaiitpinna Yarta

Two new mobile food vendors have set up near the playground, serving coffee, drinks, and food. A perfect excuse to grab a treat while the kids play.

Hallett Cove Conservation Park

Hallett Cove Boatshed Café – Overlooking the rugged coastline, this café is a great stop for breakfast, lunch, or even dinner on weekends. Open daily for breakfast from 8:00am–11:30am, lunch from 11:30am–4:00pm, and dinner on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 5:00pm–late.

After you grab a bite to eat, enjoy the Glacial Hike at Hallett Cove Conservation Park. This 2 km loop will lead you to explore some incredible geological sites, which includes evidence of an Australian ice age some 280 million years ago.

Naracoorte Caves National Park

Caves CaféOpen daily: Monday to Saturday from 10:00am–3:00pm and Sundays from 9:30am–3:00pm (hot food until 2:00pm). During peak visitor times, including school and public holidays, hours extend from 9:30am–4:00pm (hot food until 3:00pm).

The menu features fresh, seasonal dishes made with local ingredients, including wine from the nearby Wrattonbully region. The Caves Café is also a great place for breakfast on Sundays all year round for locals and visitors alike. Dine indoors or enjoy the shaded outdoor area with views of the surrounding bushland.

Flinders Chase National Park

The Rocks Café – Located at the Flinders Chase Nation­al Park Vis­i­tor Cen­tre, The Rocks Café is open daily, offering a warm, inviting space to refuel after exploring Kangaroo Island’s rugged landscapes. Their menu showcases locally sourced ingredients, from fresh coffee and artisanal teas to baked goods and hearty meals.

Mount Lofty Summit

The Summit Restaurant and Café – Open daily: Monday to Friday from 9:00am–4:00pm (kitchen closes at 2:30pm) and Saturday to Sunday from 8:00am–4:30pm (kitchen closes at 3:30pm).

Enjoy a fully licensed café with spectacular views over Adelaide. The menu features seasonal dishes and locally sourced ingredients, with indoor and outdoor seating available.

Waterfall Gully

Utopia at Waterfall Gully – Set next to an 18-metre waterfall, this century-old stone tearoom serves modern Australian cuisine in a stunning natural setting. It’s also one of South Australia’s most awarded wedding and event venues.

Adelaide Gaol

The Mugshot Canteen – Recently open, the canteen is open daily, offering fresh coffee, tasty wraps, toasties, and classic hot dogs. Whether you’re after a quick snack or something more filling, there’s plenty to choose from.
