Duck hunting

Duck hunting is only allowed during a declared Duck Hunting Open Season and only for prescribed species. The 2024 Duck Open Season in South Australia has been declared. Find out about Open Season dates, times, locations, species and restrictions here. An Open Season Duck Hunting Permit is required, applications are currently open.

Quail hunting

Hunting for feral animals, including deer

A Basic Hunting Permit is required. Please see the Information You Need to Know - Basic Hunting Permit which summarises the regulatory requirements that must be complied with. To apply for this permit, fill out the online form.

Hunting other native animals

Some native animals are not protected under the National Parks and Wildlife Act, the list of unprotected animals can be found on Schedule 10 of that Act. A Basic Hunting Permit is required to take unprotected animals listed on Schedule 10. To apply for this permit, fill out the online form.

Aboriginal hunting and gathering

  • A hunting permit is not required if an Aboriginal person hunts an animal to be used in food for the hunter or his or her dependents, or solely for cultural purposes of Aboriginal origin.
  • A hunting permit is required if an Aboriginal person hunts an animal to sell.
