Water licence and permit forms

The online water licence and permit application forms listed across the DEW website will not be available after 11am Friday 28 June 2024.


You will soon be able to lodge water licence and permit applications online through South Australia’s new mywater portal. We will be supporting water users to get set up to use mywater over the next 12 months.


In the interim, you can download PDF versions of all our water licence and permit application forms on the relevant pages below.

Forms for specific prescribed water resources areas

To apply for a new licence, vary a current licence, transfer a licence and more, click on the relevant prescribed water resources area:

Note: South Australia has a new Water Register and mywater – a new portal for water users and businesses to do business with government online.

If you wish to trade water (allocation) for use during the 2024/25 water year, please complete the NEW Application to transfer water allocation (linked for each region above).

If you wish to trade water for a longer period, please phone your regional water licensing office, using the numbers below.

We will guide you through the new application process for these trades. It is important that you apply for these trades before Friday 14 June, to ensure that they can be assessed and (if appropriate) approved before 30 June 2024.

Water meter forms

To provide a meter self-read, submit an online meter reading form.

Important note: The Meter Read Form has changed. To assist you to submit your annual meter read(s), please refer to your meter notification letter. These will be sent in the week commencing 1 July 2024. If you know your meter serial numbers, you can submit a meter read at any time using the new form.

Please note: You will not receive a water usage advice after submitting your meter read(s) for the 2023/24 water year. If you require information about your licence or account balance, please contact your regional water licencing office.

To provide details about a new meter or a change to a meter, please contact your regional water licencing office.

Forms applicable throughout the state for specific purposes

To apply for one of the following activities, select the relevant form on the statewide page:

  • note or remove an interest in a water licence
  • drain or discharge water into a well
  • use imported water (except Clare Valley)
  • use effluent water
  • water meter test
  • well driller's licence application, renewal or variation
  • well construction permit.

Additionally, from 1 July 2017, foreign persons were required to register their interests in registerable water entitlements and contractual water rights on the Register of Foreign Ownership of Water Entitlements. To find out more and how to register, follow this link.
