Permit application and reapplication information

Wednesday, 26 June 2024: We are aware of a system issue that is causing emails to be delayed in reaching permit holders. We are working on a fix to this problem as a priority and we thank you for your patience.

The online Wildlife Permit System allows you to apply for wildlife permits, manage your personal information relating to those permits, keep online records and meet the reporting requirements of your permit.

Applying for a new permit online

If you are new to using the online Wildlife Permit System and would like to apply for a permit, please refer to our step-by-step guide to the application process or contact the Fauna Permits Unit on (08) 8124 4972.

To understand what permit you need for the activity you want to undertake, be sure to view our permit types.

Applications are typically processed in 6 – 8 weeks, but this may vary depending on the permit you are applying for. If you are unsure and want to know the expected processing time for your permit, please contact the DEW Fauna Permits Unit.

Reapplying for an existing permit (online or paper-based form) – due 30 June 2024

If you:

  • are an existing permit holder and your permit is due to expire on 30 June 2024; and
  • you still have animals; or
  • you want to continue with the activities that are approved by your permit.

You must reapply for your permit by 30 June 2024.

Reapplications are now available via the Wildlife Permit System and will remain open until 31 July 2024.

Please note: If you don’t reapply by this date you will need to complete a brand-new application and must meet all the relevant criteria (information supplied on previous applications will not be considered for a new application).

Reapplying for your permit online

To reapply for a 2024 permit via the Wildlife Permit System you will need to have an existing username and password.

If you are an existing permit holder, you will get an email when your permit reapplication is available. This will include detailed information on how to reapply.

Step-by-step instructions can also be found within our how to reapply guide.

For most permits, you will be asked to review, confirm and finalise existing information.

If you don’t need to make any changes to the existing information, automatic approval may be granted for eligible permit types.

Reapplying for your permit manually (paper-based form)

Paper reapplication forms are available for permit holders who do not have access to the online permit system. To receive a paper form, please contact:

Completing your annual stock return – due 14 July 2024

A stock return is a summary of your records (a tally of the animals you brought into your home, or out of your home) for the financial year. Completing a stock return each year is part of the requirements of a wildlife permit.

You must complete a stock return even if you have no animals or have nothing new to report.

You will be able to complete your stock return from 1 July 2024. It is due each year by 14 July 2024.

You will need to provide the following information:

  • How many animals you started the year with (1 July)
  • How many animals you ended the year with (30 June)
  • If and how you got each animal (e.g., purchased, rescued), and if and how you no longer have them (e.g., sent them to someone else, or they sadly passed away)

The most important part is to make sure the list of animals you currently have is right – this is called your ‘stock on hand’.

Completing your stock return online (if you use the online record book)

Stock returns will be open via the online Wildlife Permit System from 1 July 2024.

You will need to ensure that your online record book is correct and up to date before commencing your return. Online record books will be locked for editing on 14 July 2024.

Step-by-step instructions can also be found within our how to submit your online stock return guide.

Completing your stock return manually (if you keep manual record books)

If you have completed the switch to manual records process, you will receive an email with instructions on how to complete your stock return. If you have no access to email and would prefer a hardcopy stock return form please contact:
