SA national park initiative up for an award
An initiative that puts South Australia’s premier national parks in the spotlight is up for the 2018 Walking SA Award.
The South Australian Government’s Park of the Month initiative has been nominated for the 2018 Walking SA Award in the category of ‘Special Recognition – Group/Organisation’.
The initiative aims to connect people with the state’s amazing national parks for a range of health, wellbeing and recreational benefits.
Department for Environment and Water Senior Ranger, Sean Benz said we are excited that this great initiative is being recognised in the 2018 Walking SA Awards.
“The Park of the Month initiative has been running since 2015, with one park chosen to feature each month,” Mr Benz said.
“Each Park of the Month has a program of activities such as guided walks, kayaking, snorkeling, reef rambles, rock climbing, bird watching, cruises, cubby making and planting days, as well as ideas of things for people to do in the park.
“We have found through research that potential park visitors need an event or activity to draw them to a park for the first time, then they are likely to feel more comfortable to explore the park again and again.”
The initiative is led by the Department for Environment and Water in partnership with a range of external groups such as Friends of Parks, Nature Play SA, Walking SA, local recreation groups and tourism operators.
The 2018 Walking SA Awards will be held in Adelaide city on 11 October. The Awards are held by non-for-profit group Walking SA, to recognise sustained and outstanding contributions to walking at all levels throughout SA.
