National Parks and Wildlife District Manager Nick McIntyre said the region was looking forward to welcoming participants of the World Heritage Trail Run back to the Limestone Coast on the 14th of November.

“The Trail Run is a great way to celebrate the World Heritage Naracoorte Caves and the beautiful national park it is located in,” Mr McIntyre said.

“The event caters for everyone, with participants choosing from the 23km Mega Fauna Run, 15km Stoney Point Run, 5km Dippy Run and the 1km Fossil Dash.

“The run will take participants through the scenic bushland of the Naracoorte Caves National Park, as well as neighbouring pine forest trails and farmland.”

Home of the fossils of long extinct native Australian mega-fauna, the World Heritage listed Naracoorte Caves are globally significant, providing a unique window into historic biodiversity and climate.

The inaugural Naracoorte World Heritage Trail Run and Festival was held in 2019 in conjunction with the Naracoorte World Heritage Festival.

The hugely successful event 2019 also celebrated 50 years since the discovery of the world-famous fossil beds at the Naracoorte Caves and 25 years since the caves were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

The 2020 event was cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions.

The Heritage Trail Run is supported by the Naracoorte Lucindale Council, the National Parks and Wildlife Service of SA, and Naracoorte Lucindale Business and Tourism Association.
