National Parks and Wildlife Service in July is celebrating Flinders Ranges parks as Park of the Month, including extensive activities in Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park during the school holidays.

Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park recently celebrated its 50th anniversary as a national park and it is easy to see why the area is so special.

The landscape of spectacular gorges and arid ranges has a deep cultural history and has been home to the Adnyamathanha People for millennia.

The park’s rich variety of wildlife is flourishing thanks to the Bounceback program, which has led to the recovery of yellow-footed rock wallabies in the park and the reintroduction of once locally extinct species the western quoll and brush-tailed possum.

Northern Flinders Ranges District Ranger Dave Phillips said people would need at least a few days to make the most of the region’s national parks.

“The region is increasingly becoming an international travel destination, especially with the opening of Nilpena Ediacara National Park, which is central to our nomination for World Heritage listing for the Flinders Ranges,” he said.

“Flinders Ranges parks provide visitors with a great opportunity to see the stunning natural beauty of the South Australian Outback and experience Adnyamathanha culture.

“In July, we are celebrating NAIDOC Week in the school holidays with numerous Adnyamathanha inspired activities and tours that will be free for park visitors.

“We are also lucky to have renowned South Australian artist Gilbert Dashorst visiting Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park to provide free drawing and art workshops in stunning locations such as the Cazneaux Tree and Old Wilpena Station.”

Park of the Month activities in July include:

  • A NAIDOC Art Exhibition
  • Ranger-guided tours to Adnyamathanha cultural sites
  • Adnyamathanha cultural tour of Sacred Canyon with Bookabee Tours
  • Aboriginal clap stick carving and painting
  • Boomerang painting
  • Camp oven damper with the rangers
