Venture to the mighty Murray this May
Murray River National Park boasts some of the state’s most stunning and unique natural environments, and the milder days of May are a perfect time to visit.
The beautiful park, which covers almost 15,000ha of wetlands and floodplains from Kingston-on-Murray to north of Renmark, is being celebrated as the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) Park of the Month.
A program of fun and educational events will take place across the month, including a private sunset campfire ‘chat’ with park rangers and an expert-guided bird watching walk.
NPWS Riverland District Ranger Benita Dillon has been fortunate enough to call the national park her ‘office’ for the past 6 years.
“There are so many beautiful places to see in the park,” Ms Dillon said.
“Because the park extends over six sections along the river, there is an abundance of diverse nature and wildlife on offer for everyone to see.
“There really is something for everyone. You can be adventurous and camp, bushwalk or kayak along the river, wetlands and creeks, or you can just find a shady tree on the riverbank, sit back and watch birds and the passing river traffic.
“You can also try your luck with a spot of fishing - you can really choose your own adventure.”
Ms Dillon said many areas along the River Murray received much needed water for the first time in more than 60 years as a result of the 2022-23 flood.
“While the flood did great things for the area’s wildlife in the floodplains and wetlands, it damaged some park infrastructure,” she said.
“Our staff and volunteers have been busy repairing, rebuilding and installing new facilities for visitors to enjoy, so we’re really excited to be able to welcome visitors back to check out the park and experience the incredible variety of wildlife.”
