Boat lock access during South Gates upgrade project
The Patawalonga (Pat) South Gates are a critical piece of infrastructure that reduce flood risk to the local area and maintain water quality in the Patawalonga Lake. In August 2024, on-ground replacement works will begin on the South Gates to ensure ongoing effective, safe, and reliable operations of the infrastructure. This project is scheduled for completion by mid-2025.
The concrete barrage that is currently used by pedestrians and cyclists to cross the Pat will be closed to the public for the duration of the project and a temporary walkway will be built on the western side of the barrage to allow continued safe pedestrian access.
Boat lock access
Construction materials will be delivered to the worksite via Cygnet Court and ramps positioned across the boat lock. This will affect boat access as the lock cannot be operated when the ramps are in place. Planned lock closures will occur outside of peak usage times and have been negotiated with the contractor to minimise disruption to the boating community.

• Mondays to Thursdays: 10am-2pm
• Fridays: 11am-2pm
• Weekends: no closures
Two full-day closures will be required at the start of construction to install the temporary walkway. You will be informed of these dates as soon as the schedule is confirmed. Closure times will be displayed via onsite signage, and any schedule or one-off changes will also be shared directly with the local marina associations.
We request the following action from boat owners:
• manually close the boat lock in a timely manner upon exiting to enable pedestrian access, as pedestrians will only be able to access the temporary walkway from the western side
• inform the Department for Environment and Water of any significant events or special circumstances that may be significantly impacted by the lock closures
• share information regarding the planned lock closures and pedestrian access with anyone who may use your berth.
