They’re a bucket-list item for nature-lovers, with breathtaking landscapes and awe-inspiring geological features.

Spectacular Northern Flinders parks on show this October

They are the world-renowned parks of the Northern Flinders Ranges and they are on show throughout October as the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) Park of the Month.

An exciting array of activities and events will take place across Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park, Nilpena Ediacara National Park, and Vulkathunha-Gammon Ranges National Park – and all just in time for the school holiday period.

Situated approximately 450 kilometres north of Adelaide, Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park features the iconic Wilpena Pound where visitors can explore stunning tree-lined gorges and witness the park's diverse wildlife.

The nearby Nilpena Ediacara National Park, one of the state’s newest additions, offers a unique glimpse into the origins of life through its Ediacaran fossils. The park’s immersive Ediacara Experience, set in a former blacksmith shop, features cutting-edge lighting and audiovisual technology to showcase these ancient wonders, including the famous Alice’s Restaurant Bed. During October, children can visit the park for free when accompanied by an adult as part of our special Park of the Month promotion.

Further north lies Vulkathunha-Gammon Ranges National Park, celebrated for its rugged terrain, diverse hiking trails and 4WD tracks. This park is a sanctuary for rare and endangered flora and fauna and offers a profound connection to the natural world.

District Ranger Northern Flinders David Phillips said each park in the Northern Flinders Ranges offers a distinct experience, showcasing stunning natural beauty and providing an opportunity to engage with Adnyamathanha Culture.

“With so much to see and do, you’ll need to stay a few days to fully appreciate the region's offerings,” Mr Phillips said.

The October Park of the Month events will be held in partnership with the Nature Festival, embracing the theme of “Awe”. This festival celebrates the moments that draw us into a deeper connection with nature and our surroundings.

Park of the Month highlights include:

  • Painters of the Flinders Ranges Art Exhibition
