Naracoorte Caves in the spotlight this November
National Parks and Wildlife Service’s Park of the Month is going underground this November to shine a light on SA’s only World Heritage listed site, the Naracoorte Caves.
A series of fun events are planned throughout the month to celebrate the Naracoorte Caves National Park, headlined by a free World Heritage Festival on Saturday November 2 to celebrate the 30thanniversary of the Caves’ UNESCO World Heritage listing.
The site is a must-see destination on the Limestone Coast and has plenty of activities for the whole family. Four caves are open to explore, the Wonambi Fossil Centre recreates a time when megafauna roamed the landscape and the Fossil Hunters nature playground gives kids an amazing opportunity to play palaeontologist for a day.
But Park of the Month is not just for the younger ones, with events like an underground yoga session in Blanche Cave sure to appeal to parents who might want to take some time to themselves.
Naracoorte Caves Site Manager Thomas Shortt has worked in the park for 13 years and said the Caves provided a unique opportunity to learn more about the Australian megafauna and the environment they lived in.
“We have planned some special activities for Park of the Month at both Naracoorte and Tantanoola Caves which will provide visitors with a sense of what makes these sites so special,” he said.
“The caves are an incredible part of the world and this November is a wonderful time to get down here and check them out.
“The caves have acted as pitfall traps and owl roosting sites, collecting animals for at least 500,000 years.
“They preserve the most complete fossil record we have for this period of time, spanning several ice ages, the arrival of humans in the area and the extinction of Australia’s iconic megafauna roughly 60,000 years ago.”
Park of the Month activities for November include:
- World Heritage Festival on November 2, including a trail run through the park
- Art in the Park: Drawing fossils with artist Gilbert Dashorst
- ‘Time in Nature’ nature walk at Naracoorte Caves
- Underground yoga in Blanche Cave
- Bat Night at the Naracoorte Caves with Limestone Coast Landscapes
- Meet the geologist: Guided geology walk through Tantanoola Caves
