Prescribed burn at Calperum Station in the Riverland
Date posted: 14 Apr. 2022
A prescribed burn is planned at Calperum Station, north of Barmera in the Riverland on Sunday, 17 April 2022, weather conditions permitting.
- The burn will commence at 11 am and is expected to be complete by 7 pm.
- It will affect about 1,400 hectares of land within Calperum Station, 45 km north of Barmera, northeast of Shotline Track.
- This is a landscape protection burn to reduce the likelihood of large bushfires in the area while providing a mixture of habitat age classes for a variety of threatened species.
- Some smoke may be visible from Barmera, Monash and Berri but should not impact the townships.
NPWS conducts a statewide program of prescribed burns to reduce the spread and intensity of bushfires, protect communities and enhance biodiversity. Prescribed burning is just one tool used to reduce fuel loads across strategic areas of public and private land.
Prescribed burns will only be carried out when it is deemed safe to do so and may be cancelled at short notice if conditions change.
