Date posted: 24 Oct. 2024

A prescribed burn is planned at Mount Lofty Summit (Cleland National Park), in
the Adelaide Mount Lofty Ranges, on Friday 25 October, weather conditions
permitting.

  • The burn will start at 12.00pm on Friday 25 October and is likely to be completed by 6:00pm that evening.
  • The area to be burnt is 11.4 hectares at Mount Lofty Summit immediately below the Obelisk, viewing plaza and car park. The burn site is 360 degrees around the summit.
  • This is an asset protection burn to reduce fuels and establish a buffer around the assets at Mount Lofty Summit precinct for bushfire protection.
  • Mount Lofty Summit Road will be impacted and have traffic restrictions in place. Access to the Summit car park will be also by managed. Walking trails through the burn site will be closed. The Waterfall Gully to Summit Walking Trail will be open only to Summit Road. Signage will be in place for this.
  • Mount Lofty Summit Road, Summit Car Park Entry Road and Cleland Wildlife Park Entrance Road will likely be impacted by smoke. Smoke will also be visible, particularly from Greenhill Road.
  • This burn will be highly visible from Adelaide and the surrounding Adelaide Hills communities.
  • National Parks and Wildlife Service crews will remain on site until safe.

NPWSSA conducts a statewide program of prescribed burns to reduce the spread and intensity of bushfires, protect communities and enhance biodiversity. Prescribed burning is just one tool used to reduce fuel loads across strategic areas of public and private land.

Prescribed burns will only be carried out when it is deemed safe to do so and may be cancelled at short notice.
