Prescribed burn at Para Wirra Conservation Park
Date posted: 15 Oct. 2024
A prescribed burn is planned at Para Wirra Conservation Park in the Mount Lofty Ranges on Wednesday, weather conditions permitting.
- The prescribed burn will start 10.30am Wednesday 16 October 2024 and is likely to be completed by 6pm the same day.
- The area to be burnt is 59.1ha within the park, which is about 5km west of Williamstown.
- This is a landscape protection burn to reduce the likelihood of the whole park burning in a single bushfire event.
- Traffic restrictions will be in place on Para Wirra Road, with one lane closed for the duration of the burn. Short-term road closures may be in place on Para Wirra Road throughout the burn if required.
- Para Wirra Road will be impacted by smoke. Other roads to the north of the burn, including Green Gully Road, Woodlands Road, Allendale Road and Goldfields Road, may be impacted by smoke throughout the burn.
- Restrictions may be in place on walking tracks in the area, including Quarry Track, Bowden Track and Lady Pearce Circuit Trail, for some periods during the burn.
- National Parks and Wildlife Service crews will remain on site until safe.
NPWSSA conducts a statewide program of prescribed burns to reduce the spread and intensity of bushfires, protect communities and enhance biodiversity. Prescribed burning is just one tool used to reduce fuel loads across strategic areas of public and private land.
Prescribed burns will only be carried out when it is deemed safe to do so and may be cancelled at short notice.
