Prescribed burn at Simpson Conservation Park
Date posted: 18 Oct. 2024
A prescribed burn is planned at Simpson Conservation Park on Kangaroo Island on Monday, weather conditions permitting.
- The prescribed burn will start at 10am Monday October 21 2024 and is likely to be completed by 6pm the same day.
- The area to be burnt is 123.4ha in the park, adjacent the southern end of Jeffs Road, Porky Flat, approximately 15kms south-east of Penneshaw.
- This is a landscape protection burn to reduce the likelihood of the whole park burning in a single bushfire event.
- This burn was originally planned to occur on October 9 2024 but was postponed due to poor weather conditions.
- No roads or tracks will be closed throughout this burn.
- Smoke will be visible during the burn and Jeffs Road, Black Point Road and Wilson River Road may be affected by smoke throughout the burn.
- Some smoke may be present in the area for several days following the burn but National Parks and Wildlife Service crews will remain on site until safe.
NPWSSA conducts a statewide program of prescribed burns to reduce the spread and intensity of bushfires, protect communities and enhance biodiversity. Prescribed burning is just one tool used to reduce fuel loads across strategic areas of public and private land.
Prescribed burns will only be carried out when it is deemed safe to do so and may be cancelled at short notice.
