Prescribed burn in Hambidge Wilderness Protection Area

A prescribed burn is planned at Hambidge Wilderness Protection Area (WPA) on Monday 17 October, weather conditions permitting.
- The prescribed burn will start at 11.00am and is likely to be completed by 8:00am on Tuesday 18 October.
- The area to be burnt is 480 hectares within the WPA, 20 kilometres southeast of Kyancutta.
- This is a landscape protection burn to reduce the likelihood of the whole park burning in a single bushfire event and will add to the fire break from last week’s burn.
- Smoke is likely to be highly visible from a long distance and will drift south towards the Birdseye Highway.
NPWSSA conducts a statewide program of prescribed burns to reduce the spread and intensity of bushfires, protect communities and enhances biodiversity. Prescribed burning is just one tool used to reduce fuel loads across strategic areas of public and private land. Prescribed burns will only be carried out when it is deemed safe to do so and may be cancelled at short notice if conditions change.
