Quotas and harvest data
The commercial harvest of kangaroos in South Australia is regulated by State and Commonwealth legislation.
Each year kangaroo populations for each species are estimated from aerial or ground surveys; or from a predictive population model that has been developed for South Australia from long-term survey data. Aerial surveys of kangaroo populations in South Australia have been running annually since 1978, covering a survey area of at least 207,000km2.
These kangaroo population estimates inform the commercial quota, which is set at 10-20% of the estimated population size depending on the species. A quota report is prepared annually.
