River Murray Channel Icon Site

The River Channel Icon Site is essentially the main body or artery of the entire river. It is over 2,000 km long and connects the headwaters, floodplains and wetlands with the estuary and ocean.

There have been three ecological objectives set by the Murray-Darling Basin Ministerial Council:

• increase the frequency of higher-volume flows in spring, that are ecologically significant
• overcome barriers to migration of native fish species between the sea and Hume Dam
• maintain current levels of channel stability.

Specific targets have been identified that will provide benefits and connectivity between the river channel and floodplain. Environmental monitoring is also underway to ensure ecological objectives are being met.
