Water for the environment pumped into the Riverland’s iconic Chowilla Floodplain has seen a spectacular response with waterbirds, including three migratory wading species, using the area in large numbers.

The minimum water allocation for South Australian River Murray irrigators in 2020-21 will increase from 40 to 54 percent thanks to continued improvements to water resource conditions.

The Department for Environment and Water’s (DEW) Flows for the Future project team received national recognition last week, taking home the prestigious Program Innovation Award at the Australian Water Association Awards.

South Australian River Murray water allocations will open at 40 percent for the 2020-21 water year and are likely to reach 100 percent before the start of next summer.

Works to improve the health of the Katarapko floodplain are coming to an end after a busy 18 months of construction and importantly allowing the park to reopen to the public.
